What Are Slobber Straps And Water Loops For?

Bridle with slobber straps

Even though the names of slobber straps and water loops may not immediately give away what they do, these small pieces of tack are important for both rider and horse. They have a similar and important job to do on the bit and reins.

In horse riding, slobber straps and water loops are small items of tack. These leather pieces attach reins to the bit. They increase and release pressure while riding, helping the horse get a better feel from the rider. Slobber straps are most often used on mecate reins and water loops on split reins.

The names of these two pieces of tack do trace back to their use, though; back when reins were made from rawhide that would be ruined if they got wet, slobber straps and water loops stopped the reins from getting wet as the horse had a drink of water. Keep reading to find out what slobber straps and water loops are for today.

What Are Slobber Straps And Water Loops For?

Slobber straps and water loops differ in size, but their function is essentially the same.

These pieces of tack serve three main purposes:

  1. Slobber straps and water loops attach the reins directly to the bit. Some reins do not attach easily to the bit, so slobber straps and water loops are used to do so more easily.
  1. Slobber straps, but to some degree water loops too, add weight to light reins helping the rider and horse communicate better. Some reins are too light for a horse to feel and may cause a delayed response when riding.
  1. Slobber straps and water loops protect reins from wearing unnecessarily, particularly preventing the reins from getting wet.

Do Slobber Straps Assist While Riding?

Horses learn a rider’s hand movements from the application and release of pressure on the reins. When slobber straps are used, because of their additional weight, the horse will feel it immediately when a rider releases pressure on the reins. Like all other cue’s, if used consistently, this signal to the horse that contact with the bit is coming or being released helps the horse learn faster and respond faster.

Slobber straps and water loops often help a rider avoid a delayed response. Often if a horse does not respond immediately, a rider will apply more pressure unnecessarily. Slobber straps and water loops help to prevent this.

The Difference Between Slobber Straps And Water Loops

While slobber straps and water loops generally perform the same function and many people use the terms interchangeably, there are differences between them.

The main characteristics of slobber straps are:

  • Slobber straps are generally bigger and heavier than water loops.
  • Slobber straps can be used with mecates or split reins.
  • The detailing and design of slobber straps can vary greatly, including lacing, buckles, or conchos.

The main characteristics of water loops are

  • Water loops are often smaller than slobber straps.
  • Water loops are less ornate and usually less expensive than slobber straps.

Conclusion

While slobber straps and water loops are small items of tack, their importance and function should not be underestimated. The signal they give to the horse when riding means a better feel between rider and horse when riding. They also protect the reins from general wear and tear. Happy riding!
